April 27. Historical and cultural ties between Florida and the Abacos are quite obvious. Ever since we arrived in the region, we never felt so close to the US. It actually feels like we are already back; and Great Guana Cay is, up to now, the island that reminds us the most if it.

There isn’t much for us here. The island’s main attractions are two restaurants/beach clubs: the Nippers and the Grabbers. I suppose that for the party-crowd this is a perfect place to anchor out, have a few drinks and feel right at home. So many cruisers hanging out in one place can’t be wrong about how good the cocktails and entertainment must be. One just needs to be in the mood for it and we’re not; this is not what we came to the Bahamas for. So we enjoyed the vibrant colors, the neatly trimmed grass and decided to be on our way. We’re hoping that the next stop will feel a little more Bahamian and a little less American…

Treasure Cay 26.67021°N 077.28366°W

April 28 to May 1. We made a quick stop in Treasure Cay where, for 10$, one can use the dinghy dock, the pool and get high speed Internet. This is the first time we pay to anchor out, but since we needed to download a few movies for the evenings we decided that it was a great investment. That’s mostly important, as the BTC Internet connexion has been very spotty since we got to the Abacos.

The beach on the north side of the island is featured in many “Top 10 best beaches in the world” type of countdown. I’m not sure I would agree with the ranking, but it is nonetheless fabulous for swimming. Water is unfortunately not clear enough for snorkelling, but with sand as soft as icing sugar, it’s not a great surprise. As we couldn’t find any shade to hide from the ever-burning sun, we elected to go back to the pool and hide under some palm trees. If you come up to Treasure Cay, do take a beach umbrella with you to enjoy the beach; we didn’t have one on board.

Treasure Cay is also a great place to fill up with diesel before proceeding north. We eventually found some in Green Turtle Cay, but the service dock is so much more convenient here. As a quick note, you do not have to pay to anchor out if you stay on the boat and do not go ashore.

Access to the beach is through the resort located across the road from the marina.

Many villas are located along the beach, but we found that we can walk all the way to the point without trespassing.

Abacos: Le centre

27 avril. Il n’est pas difficile de voir les liens qui unissent la Floride et les Abacos autant du point de vue historique que culturel. Depuis notre arrivée dans cette région des Bahamas, nous avons l’impression d’être déjà de retour aux États-Unis. Great Guana Cay est, jusqu’à présent, l’ile qui nous rappelle le plus que nous sommes sur le chemin du retour. Je dois dire que ça nous plait plus ou moins.

Il n’y a pas grand chose pour nous ici. Les deux principales attractions sont deux bars/restaurants/beach club : le Nippers et le Grabbers. J’imagine que pour des marins qui aiment faire la fête sans se sentir trop dépaysés c’est idéal. Je soupçonne même que les cocktails doivent être vraiment pas mal; autant de bateaux au mouillage ne peuvent pas se tromper à ce point. Mais ce n’est pas ce que nous recherchions aux Bahamas, alors on apprécie les couleurs vives, les beaux gazons taillés courts et on reprend rapidement la route en espérant que le prochain arrêt sera un peu plus bahamien et un peu moins américain…

28 avril au 1er mai. Arrêt rapide à Treasure Cay où l’on peut se mettre à l’ancre près de la marina et profiter du dinghy dock, de la piscine et de l’Internet pour 10$ par jour. C’est bien la première fois que nous payons pour nous mettre à l’ancre, mais puisque que nous avons besoin de télécharger quelques films pour occuper nos soirées, nous considérons que c’est un excellent investissement. Surtout que le réseau de BTC dans les Abacos a été particulièrement lent depuis notre arrivée.

La plage au nord de l’ile est splendide et se retrouve dans le top 10 de nombreux guides touristiques. L’eau est fabuleuse pour la baignade, mais plus assez claire pour le snorkeling. Le soleil étant encore particulièrement fort, nous avons préféré retourner à la piscine de la marina et profiter de l’ombre des palmiers. Je sais que je ne ferai pas pleurer personne au Québec avec notre soleil trop intense, mais c’est que nous n’en revenons pas encore de l’effet qu’il peut avoir sur nous.

Si vous poursuivez vers le nord, profitez du quai de service pour faire le plein de diésel qui est tout juste à côté du mouillage; rendu à Green Turtle Cay l’accès est un peu moins pratique. Notez aussi que vous n’avez pas à payer pour jeter l’ancre si vous n’allez pas à terre.
