April 6 to 11. We left Warderick Wells early on Sunday morning, hoping to make the most of the SE wind in the low teens that were forecasted. In the end, we motorsailed the entire 42 NM. The wind finally picked up… as we were entering the Rock Sound anchorage!

The light winds allowed us to put the fishing line in the water and to catch a beautiful mahi-mahi. The fish had no interest in meeting us, so Michel had to fight very hard to bring it on board. These past few years I’ve always felt uneasy about how far the food we eat has to travel and most of all, how disconnected we are from the meat and fish we consume. Walking in a grocery store at home, it’s easy to imagine that beef actually grows in Styrofoam containers and that fish simply spends its whole life as a frozen stick. Here, it’s different and I like it. That delicious mahi-mahi that was on our plate at lunchtime was swimming alongside the boat just two hours prior. I believe that being involved in the process makes us appreciate what we have and makes us less likely to waste. How could we throw away the fish that we've just brought on board and that fought so hard?

Eleuthera surprised us and reminded us of Long Island with its well-maintained houses, tidy gardens and very nice people. Here, garbage disposal is free, the lady at the Laundromat is all smiles, the grocery store is well stocked and the hardware store almost fills propane tanks at the boat, almost.

On our way to the hardware store, propane tanks in hand, a small pickup truck pulled over beside us, its back full of empty beer bottles. It felt and looked a little suspicious. What was this guy trying to sell us? But here is the driver with a huge smile offering to take our propane tanks with him to the plant as he is headed there anyways. Somewhat sceptic, we hesitated a little. We didn’t even know his name, let alone his intentions. What if our tanks were to disappear forever; an aluminum tank is not exactly cheap and I couldn’t quite imagine calling the cops to tell them that we gave our propane tanks to a perfect stranger… But hey, in Rome do like the romans do, so we threw the tanks in the back of the truck and hoped for the best. The driver told us to pay at the hardware store and asked us where our dinghies were. He would drop off the tanks on his way back and save us some heavy lifting. As we got back from our errands, we found both Croix du Sud’s and Watermusic’s tanks patiently waiting for us at the dock. It’s so nice to realize that there are still nice and reliable people in the world.

Rock Sound offers two dinghy docks : one is located just north of the Anglican church, the other, further north, is located by the tiki bar at Pascal’s restaurant. The first one will bring you closer to the Esso gas station, the BTC office and 3Ts Laundromat. All three businesses are on the north side of town as you head along the main road. To reach the Laundromat, make a right at the BTC tower and another right as you get to a T in the road. It will be the third building to your right. The second dock is a 5-minute walk away from a small shopping center that houses the hardware store, the grocery store, another gas station and a few more businesses. Once again, head north on the main highway. On your way there you will also come across a liquor store and a crafts stand selling straw baskets.

Eleuthera: Rock Sound

6 au 11 avril. Nous sommes partis tôt dimanche matin de Warderick Wells pour profiter des vents du SE annoncés pour la journée. C’est finalement sous voiles et moteur que nous avons parcouru les 42 NM nous séparant de Rock Sound, Eleuthera. Le vent attendu s’est finalement manifesté… à notre arrivée au mouillage!

Le temps calme nous aura au moins permis de pêcher et de remonter à bord un superbe mahi-mahi qui n’avait aucun intérêt à faire notre rencontre. Michel a donc bataillé très fort pour le ramener au bateau. Ces dernières années, j'ai toujours eu un malaise par rapport à la distance que parcourt ce qui se retrouve dans nos assiettes et surtout par rapport à l'aseptisation de l'apparence de la viande ou du poisson. À regarder nos épiceries, il semblerait que le boeuf ou le tilapia sont élevés en barquettes de styromousse ou en bâtonnets congelés. Ici, c'est autre chose et c'est tant mieux comme ça. Le délicieux mahi-mahi qui s'est retrouvé dans notre assiette sur l'heure du midi nageait à côté du bateau deux heures auparavant. Je pense que nous apprécions plus ce que nous mangeons lorsque nous sommes impliqués dans le processus et il est beaucoup plus difficile de gaspiller lorsque nous avons "rencontré" le poisson.

Eleuthera nous a agréablement surpris, nous rappelant un peu Long Island avec ses maisons bien propres, ses jardins entretenus et ses résidents très sympathiques. Ici, les poubelles sont gratuites, la dame de la buanderie est tout sourire, l’épicerie est bien garnie et la quincaillerie fait presque le plein de propane à domicile, presque.

En route pour la quincaillerie avec nos bouteilles de propane en mains, un petit camion s’arrête à notre hauteur. L’arrière est plein de bouteilles de bière vides. Ça nous semble un peu louche, mais le conducteur arbore un immense sourire et nous dit qu’il se dirige justement vers le dépôt de propane et qu’il peut remplir nos bombonnes en quelques minutes. Un peu étonnés, nous nous demandons si nous souhaitons vraiment confier notre chargement à un inconnu dont nous ne connaissons ni le nom, ni les intentions et que nous risquons de ne plus jamais revoir. Mais bon, à Rome il faut faire comme les romains, alors hop les bouteilles passent dans la boite de la camionnette et Croix du Sud et nous-mêmes croisons les doigts. Le conducteur nous dit simplement d’aller payer à la quincaillerie et nous demande où sont nos dinghies; il ira porter les bouteilles directement au quai. À notre retour de l’épicerie, au dinghy dock de chez Pascal les bouteilles pleines étaient là à nous attendre. C’est agréable de réaliser qu’il y a encore des gens serviables et honnêtes.

Plus tard dans la semaine, une fois le front passé, nous sommes retournés en ville pour faire un peu de tourisme. L’attraction principale du coin est le Ocean Hole, où cohabitent touristes et poissons tropicaux. La chose la plus frappante de l’endroit n’est pas le trou d’eau salée que certains disent sans fond et qui est relié à la mer par un passage sous-marin; c’est la présence du parc qui l’entoure. Le premier que nous ayons vu depuis notre arrivée aux Bahamas! Nous avons donc laissé les poissons à un groupe de visiteurs et je me suis extasiée devant une végétation et des aménagements qui, au Québec, seraient l’équivalent d’un parc laissé en friche. Les agaves en fleurs étaient par contre, toutes régions du monde confondues, spectaculaires!

Rock Sound offre deux dinghy docks : l’un près de l’église anglicane et l’autre, plus au nord, à côté de chez Pascal, le restaurant avec un tiki bar sur pilotis. Le premier vous donnera accès à une station d’essence Esso, au bureau BTC et à la buanderie 3Ts. Les trois commerces se trouvent au nord, le long de la route principale. Pour la buanderie, il vous faudra prendre à droite à la hauteur de l’antenne BTC et encore à droite à l’intersection en T suivante. La buanderie sera le troisième bâtiment sur votre droite. Le deuxième quai vous mènera après une courte marche de 5 minutes à un mini centre commercial qui héberge l’épicerie, la quincaillerie, une autre station d’essence et plusieurs autres commerces. Encore une fois, il suffit de prendre vers le nord sur la route principale en sortant de chez Pascal. En chemin, vous croiserez aussi un liquor store et un kiosque d’artisanat.
