April 16 to 18. Spanish Wells is located on the northern tip of Eleuthera. It is built on St-Georges Cay, a small island about 1,5 miles long by 0,25 mile wide. The name of the city originated with the Spanish galleons that would stop here on their way to Europe to refill their water caskets. The city is known for its important fishing fleet; 75% of the Bahamian lobster production comes from here and we saw some its fishing boats as far as the Jumentos.

Walking along the dock is an experience in itself. To one side there are the fishing boats on which maintenance teams and dockhands are hard at work; to the other are a boat yard, a few chandleries, a grocery store, warehouses and some cute houses; in the middle lies the street that serves as the main dock, a sidewalk, a storage area, a gas station and of course, a street. Pedestrians, golf carts and pickup trucks all share the same space without any incident and create a surprising energy. Spanish Wells is not a ghost town, it’s a city that moves and that is organized. Small wooden cottages are built on the eastern tip of the island and bring a New England feel to the village, with a few added palm trees!

Reefs surround the northern shore of Eleuthera. The most infamous is the Devil’s Backbone. It is strongly recommended not to venture in it alone. A local pilot will cost around 80$ each way. However, hiring one pilot for multiple boats will not bring the price down, one of our friend asked. We personally decided to postpone this trip to another time as we were not compelled to visit Dunmore Town and its jetsetter tourists.

Watch for some good weather before heading to Spanish Wells, the mooring field is very tight and there might not be enough balls for everyone. We came in third, behind Océane and Croix du Sud and were left without one. We really didn’t mind as we were planning to anchor anyways, but on the second day after we struggled to find a decent patch of sand to dig our anchor into, we would have liked to have a spare mooring available. There is some room south of Gun Point to anchor in front of the private moorings, but the bottom is rocky with very little sand on top, if any. We still had a good night sleep and the boat didn’t move an inch, but that’s probably more due to the weight of the chain than anything else. There is much better holding in deep sand south-east of Charles Island, however winds with a southern component will make the anchorage really uncomfortable. With a light easterly wind, it’s perfect and dolphins do stop by to check out the boat!

On our third day, we lifted anchor at high tide and headed for Royal Island. High tide being in the morning; I had to give up my plans to visit Preachers Cave with the dinghy. But it’s ok, we had a new project for the day: clean and scrub the boat. She really needed it! Mother Nature took care of the rinse cycle with torrential rainfalls in the afternoon.

Eleuthera: Spanish Wells

16 au 18 avril. À l’extrémité nord d’Eleuthera se trouve la ville de Spanish Wells construite sur St-George’s Cay, un ilot de 1,5 miles de longueur par tout juste 0,25 miles de largeur. La ville tire son nom des galions espagnols qui arrêtaient ici au 17e siècle pour s’approvisionner en eau avant le long retour vers l’Europe. Spanish Wells est maintenant le principal port de pêche des Bahamas (75% de la production de langoustes du pays provient d’ici) et nous avons rencontré certains de ses langoustiers jusque dans les Jumentos.

Marcher le long des quais est une expérience en soi. D’un côté, les bateaux de pêches sur lesquels s’affairent des équipes d’entretien et de débardeurs; de l’autre, un chantier maritime, des entrepôts, une épicerie et des maisons; au centre une rue à peine assez large pour deux véhicules qui sert à la fois de quai principal, de route, de trottoir, de station service et d’entrepôt. Piétons, voiturettes de golf et camionnettes coexistent sans aucun problème et créent une activité surprenante. Pas de ville fantôme ici; ça bouge et ça s'organise. La pointe est de l’ile est occupée par de petites maisons de bois rappelant les villages de pêche de la Nouvelle-Angleterre, les palmiers en plus!

La pointe nord d’Eleuthera est entourée de récifs, le plus connu d’entre tous est le Devil’s Backbone. Il est fortement recommandé de retenir les services d’un pilote local pour le traverser. Budgétez 80$ par direction et par bateau, même en flottille. Nous avons préféré remettre l’expérience à une prochaine fois puisque nous ne tenions pas particulièrement à visiter Dunmore Town, endroit de la jet set et du tourisme s’il en est un.

C’est cette barrière de corail qui a mené les fondateurs d’Eleuthera sur ses côtes où ils ont fait naufrage. Les Eleutherans Adventurers, des Britanniques puritains, ont quitté les Bermudes après la première guerre civile qui s’est étendue du Royaume-Uni à ses colonies. Ils étaient à la recherche d’un endroit où ils pourraient pratiquer leur religion librement. Eleutheria est d’ailleurs le mot grec qui signifie « liberté ».

Prévoyez du beau temps pour venir ici, les moorings sont très serrés et peu nombreux. Océane et Croix du Sud ont pris les deux derniers, mais comme nous préférons nous mettre à l’ancre ce n’était pas vraiment un problème. L’ancrage peut toutefois devenir un calvaire. Le fond dans la passe près de Gun Point offre une tenue très passable, il n’y a que de la roche et le courant est assez fort. Nous n’avons pas vraiment eu de problème, M s'est réveillée exactement là où elle s'était couchée, mais comme nous sommes un peu maniaques avec notre ancre, j’ai remonté et redescendu de la chaine à n’en plus finir le deuxième jour à la recherche d'un peu de sable! La tenue est nettement meilleure au sud-est de Charles Island, mais avec un vent à composante sud, ça brasse sérieusement.

Nous avons finalement déménagés vers Royal Island le troisième jour, laissant derrière mes projets de visiter Preachers Cave en dinghy. Notre nouveau projet : nettoyer, gratter, frotter et dessaler M qui en avait bien besoin. Mère Nature s’est occupée du rinçage avec des pluies diluviennes en après-midi.

April 13 to 16. We chose Goulding Cay as our next step en route to Spanish Wells. We were looking forward to exploring its underwater reefs covered with anemones and were also hoping to take a peak through the Glass Window, a rocky formation popular with tourists since the 19th century. Back then; a natural bridge linked the central part of Eleuthera to its northern tip. At this specific point, the island is only 30 feet wide and any sailor passing by can look out the "window" towards the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately, like any major rock formation subjected to the violence of the seas, a hurricane finally got the best of the natural bridge and it went out to sea.

Many bridges have since been built to link the two cliffs and allow transportation between the southern and northern parts of the island. If the current bridge makes our beloved Champlain Bridge look brand new, it’s mostly the surrounding scenery that impresses. On one side stands the steel blue Atlantic Ocean with crashing waves; on the other are the quiet turquoise waters of the bank. The contrast is fascinating. However, the unexpected came from an abandoned Christmas tree with its entire light set still intact and drying out by the side of the road. That dried out fir tree with the turquoise of the bay behind it made quite an impression in such an isolated place.

The anemone island as I call it, also known as Goulding Cay, doesn’t have much to offer anymore. I snorkelled its full coastline, it’s quite small, and couldn’t find much of what the guides describe as ”a fantastic snorkelling spot that even had Jacque Cousteau’s scientists baffled”. All I came across were a few fishes, some anemones on one specific rock and a lot of sand over the corals.

After my pitiful discovery, Mathieu from Croix du Sud went out looking for a better spot and found some good snorkelling off of Mutton Fish Point. There are some very nice rock formations in about 15 feet of water that are covered with colourful fan corals. Michel even speared a female hog fish that managed to escape. That’s too bad as, having heard about how great this fish tastes, we were looking forward to dinner that night. A little further south, we came across the largest school of baitfish we had ever seen. There must have been thousands of them crammed between three big boulders.

For our last night in Goulding Cay, we took full advantage of the clear skies and lack of ambient light to watch a total lunar eclipse. And we didn’t have to go far, we stayed right in bed watching it through the hatches.

Eleuthera: Goulding Cay

13 au 16 avril. Notre prochain arrêt sur la route de Spanish Wells: Goulding Cay. Au programme, une ile aux fonds marins couverts d’anémones et le Glass Window, une formation rocheuse connue et visitée depuis le 19e siècle. À l’époque, un pont naturel reliait la partie centrale d’Eleuthera à sa partie nord. À cet endroit, l’ile mesure tout juste 30 pieds de largeur. Il était donc facile pour un marin faisant route sur le banc de jeter un œil par la "fenêtre" et de voir l’Atlantique. Mais comme pour toute formation rocheuse assujettie à la violence de la mer, un ouragan a finalement eu raison de l’arche de pierres qui s’est effondrée. Pour faire simple, imaginez le Rocher Percé avec un bout de terre de chaque côté.

Afin d’assurer la liaison entre les deux sections de l’ile, plusieurs ponts on consécutivement été construits sur les falaises. Si le pont actuel fait plutôt peur et donne un aspect tout neuf à notre bon vieux Pont Champlain, c’est principalement le paysage qui impressionne. D’un côté, l’Atlantique d’un bleu acier avec ses grosses vagues qui se brisent contre les rochers; de l’autre, l’eau turquoise et calme du banc. Le contraste est magnifique. Un contraste encore plus frappant? Celui d’un sapin de Noël abandonné au bord de la route avec en arrière plan la baie aquamarine. On aura vraiment tout vu!

L’ile aux anémones, connue sous le nom de Goulding Cay, n’a plus grand chose à offrir aux visiteurs. Si les guides nous en parlent comme d’un endroit magnifique avec tant d’anémones que même les scientifiques de Jacques Cousteau s’en étonnaient; il ne reste plus que quelques spécimens sur un rocher, un beau banc de poissons et beaucoup d’ensablement.

Nous avons par contre découvert, merci à Mathieu de Croix du Sud, de quoi faire un peu de snorkeling sur les falaises de Mutton Fish Point. De belles formations rocheuses se tiennent dans une quinzaine de pieds d’eau et sont couvertes de coraux de toutes les couleurs. Nous y avons même aperçu un poisson hog fish femelle que Michel a réussi à harponner, mais qui s’est sauvé. Dommage, la réputation de ce poisson en fait un des meilleurs à déguster. Un peu plus au sud, c’est un banc de milliers d’alvins, argentés et miroitants au soleil, que nous avons découverts entre quelques rochers. C’est tout de même rassurant de voir comme la nature se porte bien par endroit.

Pour notre dernier soir à Goulding Cay, nous nous sommes offerts une éclipse lunaire totale. La nuit était magnifique, avec quelques nuages, des étoiles brillantes et une pleine lune. Nous avons eu la chance d’observer l’éclipse, bien au chaud, depuis notre le lit en regardant par les écoutilles au plafond.

April 12. While visiting the Tourism Office in Governors Harbour, we discovered that there was a National Park just outside the city limits: the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve. With every trip we take comes a new botanical garden and the Bahamas wouldn’t be left out! A quick glance at the park’s website informed me that some orchids would be in bloom between April and June. I could hardly believe it; I would finally get to see flowering orchids in their natural habitats! Was I ever excited. After a long two-mile walk under the scorching sun, the anticipation and excitement had receded a little… It took us over an hour to get to the main gate and there was still the whole park to explore. Good thing we had plenty of water with us.

So, who was Leon Levy? He was « a famed Wall Street financier. For many years, he and his wife, Shelby White, have had a home on Eleuthera. They loved the island and were concerned that the native habitat and knowledge of the island’s medicinal plants were disappearing. In 2006, Shelby White approached the Bahamas National Trust about creating an appropriate memorial to her husband on Eleuthera. » Based on what we’d learned in town, the Bahamian Prime Minister was on site, the day prior, to launch the second phase of the project.

Lets say that there are worst places to hold a press conference.

The preserve is the first National Park on Eleuthera and covers 25 acres of woodland. One can find 71 species of indigenous plants and 34 species of birds during a visit. The trails are well maintained and meander trough epiphyte plants, a bromeliad garden, medicinal plants, economical plants, an observation tower from which one can see the ocean, a mangrove and a fresh water garden. A section of the preserve is dedicated to fruits and vegetables grown by the various people that populated the Bahamas. It’s very interesting to discover what the Lucayans, Spanish, British and Africans brought to these islands.

The orchids? The flower stems were growing, but they were a few weeks away from blooming. I suppose that winter was harsh this year and that spring is not quite around the corner. It’s hard to believe considering how hard the sun is on me, but hey I’m not a tropical plant.

Eleuthera: Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve

12 avril. En visitant le bureau du Ministère du Tourisme de Governors Harbour, nous avons découvert l’existence d’un parc national situé tout juste à l’extérieur de la ville : la Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve. À chaque voyage son jardin botanique et les Bahamas ne feront pas exception à la règle! Un rapide coup d’œil au site Internet du parc et j’apprenais que la période de floraison de certaines orchidées s’étendait d’avril à juin. Des orchidées en fleur dans leur environnement naturel; l’excitation était à son comble! Après plus de deux milles à pieds, l’excitation était un peu moins palpable... Sous un soleil de plomb, nous avons mis près de une heure quinze pour arriver à la guérite principale et il fallait encore visiter le parc.

Mais qui donc était Leon Levy? Un riche financier New Yorkais qui possédait une villa sur l’ile et qui revenait, année après année, y passer ses vacances en compagnie de sa femme. Tous deux adoraient Eleuthera et s’inquiétait de voir la pression mise sur l’écosystème local ainsi que l’effritement des connaissances reliées aux plantes médicinales indigènes. En 2006, quelques temps après le décès de son époux, Shelby White approcha le gouvernement bahamien avec l’intention de créer quelque chose de symbolique à la mémoire de son bien aimé. C’est ainsi qu’avec le support financier de la Leon Levy Foundation est née la Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve. Selon ce que nous avons appris en ville, le Premier Ministre bahamien était sur place la veille afin de lancer la phase II du projet.

Premier parc national sur Eleuthera, la réserve s’étend sur près de 25 acres de boisé. Elle renferme près de 71 espèces de plantes et abrite 34 variétés d’oiseaux. Les sentiers aménagés serpentent entre des plantes épiphytes, des broméliacées, des plantes médicinales, des plantes dites économiques, une tour d’observation de laquelle on peut apercevoir l’Atlantique, une mangrove et un jardin d’eau douce. Une section du parc est réservée à l’agriculture et aux différentes variétés de fruits et de légumes cultivés par les peuples ayant habité les iles. Il est donc possible d’apprécier les apports des Lucayans, des Espagnols, des Anglais et des Africains à la flore bahamienne.

Les orchidées? Les hampes florales étaient présentes, mais encore très loin de la floraison. J’imagine que l’hiver a été dur ici et que le printemps se fait attendre. Difficile à croire avec le soleil qui nous écrase, mais j'imagine que tout est relatif.
