On the 18th of April, we departed Eleuthera and made the 58 NM passage to the Abacos. We made the best of the southeast winds and anchored behind Pelican Point in the late afternoon. It was to be our first stop before proceeding to Marsh Harbour where a much needed trip to the grocery store and laundromat awaited us. We finally anchored outside Hope Town on April 23rd, just under its beautiful candy cane lighthouse.

We loved Hope Town! It’s gorgeous and it’s got so much history. A South Carolinian lady and loyalist, Wyannie Malone, founded the city at the end of the 18th century. The lighthouse came later, in the 1860s, and was met with much discontent from the residents. The thing is that, back then, the people of Elbow Cay relied on three main sources of income: shipbuilding, fishing and salvaging wrecks. They voluntarily misguided ships so that they would wreck on the reefs surrounding the island and would then salvage the cargo they carried. Clearly, the lighthouse would destroy their business model!

| There is no road between the lighthouse and the village, you have to arrive by boat. |
For the first seventy years, the light was fixed. However, in the 1930s the need to differentiate the lighthouse from other lights on the island brought along a major refit. Lenses and a revolving mechanism were taken from an old lighthouse south of Bimini and moved to Hope Town. Since then, the lighthouse flashes 5 times every 15 seconds. Seen from the cockpit of the boat, the lighthouse sits majestically on top of its hill; a tall shadow on a starlit sky. I spent long minutes sitting there just watching the beam flash above the boat and thinking how lucky we were to be anchored right there beside it. Usually sitting so close to a lighthouse is not good news.
There was something from another era in the yellow beam that flickered like the flame of a candle. That warm light comes from the kerosene burner, a sort of giant hurricane lantern. The lenses from the Fresnel concentrate that light and make it so different from today’s extra bright and extra white electric light bulbs. The Fresnel weights close to four tons and floats on a bath of mercury. It is still, even today, cranked manually using the original counterweight system. The keeper needs to go up there, all 101 steps of it, every two hours to keep the revolving motion going and to bring up some much needed kerosene. That’s hard work!

We initially tied up at the Hope Town Inn & Marina dinghy dock. After a good walk around the resort exploring some narrow lanes and woodland trails, we came to the conclusion that there was no road linking it to the lighthouse. Before leaving, we made good note of the restaurant and of the nice refreshing pool. We now had a plan for the afternoon, all we needed was to find the lighthouse before it got too hot to go up all those stairs. We found it, just a few seconds away at the base of the lighthouse. It has its own dinghy dock! We must have been searching with our eyes closed when we first drove by…

| Dinghy dock. How did we miss that? Really. |
 |
| Cheese everyone. |
 |
| Beautiful view out over the Abacos Sea. |
 |
| To walk out on the observation deck one needs to go through a tiny door. Just like Alice in Wonderland. |

Abacos: Hope Town Lighthouse
